Segmented Woodturning Projects

Segmented woodturning has recently become one of my favorite pasttimes. I particularly enjoy designing and turning bowls and vases with a southwestern pattern in the feature ring. Most of the pieces I have turned are pictured below.

This was my first attempt at making a segmented bowl. It's made up of Purpleheart, Maple, and Bloodwood. I made a few mistakes along the way, the most obvious one is that I left out 2 layers of veneer just below the Bloodwood and Maple design when I glued the segmented layers together (oops!). But I enjoyed the experience and will definitely attempt to design some more bowls with southwestern style patterns in the future. Kevin Neelley's Woodturnings site is an excellent resource for learning about designing and making segmented bowls

Lacewood Ribbon. This one is unlike most of the pieces on this page, but it also began as 3 segmented bowls (based on concept and design by Malcolm Tibbetts).

The same 4 pieces shown above... this was the display from the University of Arizona's 2011 "On Our Own Time" staff art exhibit.
