I
coached the Alamogordo boy's tennis team during the 1981 school year.
It was my second (and last) year of teaching at the high school in New
Mexico. The team consisted of students from the middle school (9th and
10th grades) and the high school (11th and 12th). From left to right:
myself, Sid Newcomb, H.J. Huffman, Shane Norman, Brian Conley, Andy
Norman, and Pat Florence.
Holly
Friend and I took second place in the Mixed Open Doubles event at the
1981 Alamogordo Open tennis tournament, defeating the number 1 seeded
team in the semi-finals. Unfortunately we didn't play as well in the
finals. Holly and I moved to Alamogordo at about the same time, and met
on the tennis courts before school started in September 1979. She was
the number one singles player on the high school girl's team during the
years I taught in Alamogordo.
Our La Mariposa tennis team won the 1997 Tucson Citizen Cup Division
II championship. I played in the 35 doubles division the entire season
with either Jack Obrzut or Ed Rosely (not pictured). The 35 doubles
team only loss all season was in the semi-finals against El
Conquistador because the captain forced us to retire to avoid injury
(he thinks we are getting old :-), since the team had already won with
a 4-0 record in the other matches.
